Roy Exum: The Saturday Funnies

My dear friend Wendell sends me his thought for the week and the newest is superb. “It is not dying that bothers me … it’s the not being here anymore.” That may be one of the most profound observations I’ve heard in some time and have laughed about it ever since.

As we open a new issue of The Saturday Funnies, please be reminded I am neither clever nor able to come up with the daily laughter that comes in my weekly emails. I want my “contributors” to know The Saturday Funnies has now built quite a reputation. These stories are forwarded and repeated all over the country for one reason: we must never fail to laugh about ourselves.

This has been a taxing week on our country with the Supreme Court nomination but long after the furor dies down, humor and laughter never go out of style. Here are the best of the week:

THE WOMAN WHO DROVE A HOT-AIR BALLOON

A woman in a hot-air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.

She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Republican."

"I am," replied the man. "How did you know?"

"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct. But I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me."

The man smiled and responded, "You must be an Obama Democrat."

"I am," replied the balloonist. "How did you know?"

"Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you are going ... You've risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it's my fault."

THE KIND BARBER & COMMUNITY SERVICE WEEK

“Blessed are those that can give without remembering … and take without forgetting.”

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.'

The florist was pleased and left the shop.

When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.'

The cop was happy and left the shop.

The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.'

The Congressman was very happy and left the shop.

The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it.

As Ronald Reagan said: “Both politicians and diapers need to be changed often and for the same reason.”

THIS MAKES PERFECT SENSE TO KIDS WHO WATCH TV

Two young boys walked into a pharmacy one day, picked out a box of tampons and proceeded to the checkout counter.

The pharmacist at the counter asked the older boy, 'Son, how old are you?'

'Eight', the boy replied.

The man continued, 'Do you know what these are used for?'

The boy replied, 'Not exactly, but they aren't for me. They're for him. He's my brother. He's four."

"Oh, really?" the pharmacist replied with a grin.

"Yes." the boy said. "We saw on TV that if you use these, you would be able to swim, play tennis and ride a bike.

Right now, he can't do none of those."

THE TRUTH COMES OUT AT A YARD SALE

I went to a yard sale in an upscale neighborhood and a perfectly new set of digital scales on top of their box. 'Are they accurate and in working order' I asked the portly lady behind the table.

'Yes they are, that's why I'm selling them' was her reply.

DEAD SEA SCROLLS REVEAL WHERE PETS CAME FROM

It is reported that the following edition of the Book of Genesis was discovered in the Dead Sea Scrolls. If authentic, it would shed light on the question, "Where do pets come from?"

And Adam said, "Lord, when I was in the garden, you walked with me everyday. Now I do not see you anymore. I am lonesome here and it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me."

And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will know I love you, even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish and childish and unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself."

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam. And it was a good animal. And God was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and he wagged his tail. And Adam said, "But Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and all the good names are taken and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And God said, "No problem! Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG."

And Dog lived with Adam and was a companion to him and loved him. And Adam was comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that Adam's guardian angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam has become filled with pride. He struts and preens like a peacock and he believes he is worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught him that he is loved, but no one has taught him humility."

And the Lord said, "No problem! I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever and who will see him as he is. The companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know that he is not worthy of adoration."

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam. And Cat would not obey Adam. And when Adam gazed into Cat's eyes, he was reminded that he was not the supreme being. And Adam learned humility.

And God was pleased. And Adam was greatly improved.

And Cat did not care one way or the other.

TRUST ME – DON’T EVER ANGER RETIRED PEOPLE

Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting.

Well, for example, the other day I went into town and went into a shop. I was only in there for about 5 minutes. When I came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket.

I went up to him and said, "Come on son, how about giving a senior citizen a break?"

He ignored me and continued writing the ticket.

I called him a Nazi.

He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tires.

So I called him “the child of a dog.”

He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first.

Then he started writing a third ticket.

This went on for about 20 minutes.

The more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote.

Personally, I could have cared less … I came into town by bus.

Retired people should try to have this much fun anytime they can.

I USED TO LIKE THE KID NEXT DOOR

I had a problem yesterday, so I called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control and asked him to come over. Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.

As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong?

He replied, 'It was an ID ten T error.'

I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, 'An, ID ten T error? What's that? In case I need to fix it again.'

Eric grinned ...'Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?’ and mystified, I shook my head. 'No,' I replied.

'Write it down,' he said, 'and I think you'll figure it out.'

So I wrote down: “ID10T.”

Really, I used to like the kid.

Joda Does Not Support Key Values For District 30 And Tennessee

I find it laughable to see people post editorials on the Chattanoogan and claim to be a Republican voting for Joda.  In reality, when you review the person’s voting record, they typically have a suspect voting record.  Truth is, Joda is a Democrat – pure and simple. When listening to Joda he never talks about his Democratic values and opinions. Instead he talks about ... (click for more)

Teach For America Raises Concerns

For the last several years, many groups, individuals and parties interested in preserving public education for our children have stood firm as a rampantly growing privatization movement has descended upon our local educational landscape.  We saw last year the Department of Education push a plan that would form a partnership zone which could potentially lead to schools in the ... John Gilpin Repeats As Signal Mountain 10K Winner

John Gilpin made it three in a row in the rain at Signal Mountain Saturday morning. He had claimed victory in both the Raccoon Mountain and Moccasin Bend 10K races in recent weeks before adding his second straight triumph at the Signal Mountain Pie Run, a hilly 6.2-mile race that starts and finishes at the Signal Mountain Athletic Club on Ault Road. Gilpin was all alone again ... (click for more)

OoltewahThumps Cleveland, 34-20, To Near Region 2-6A No. 2 Playoff Seed

Maybe it’s time to tag the Ooltewah Owls as the “Comeback Kids.” The Owls rallied from a 21-7 halftime deficit to clip Bradley Central, 28-27, on Kyrell Sanford’s 16-yard pass to Fisher Perry in the third quarter and turned the outcome over to the team’s defense. Three weeks ago, Ooltewah scored on a 55-yard pass from Sanford to T.J. Taylor with 13 seconds remaining to ... (click for more)
