UTC Soccer Blanks North Alabama 3-0

Friday, September 14, 2018

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team earned a 3-0 win over North Alabama in the Mocs’ final game of the non-conference slate. Chattanooga improves to 4-4-1 on the year and the Lions fall to 5-4 overall.

Senior Masey Fox scored the game winner in the first half and sophomore Chloe Arnold added two second half goals to secure the win while freshman keeper Ashton Shields recorded her third shutout of the season.

Fox notched her third goal of the year in the 18th minute picking up a deflected shot off the Lions keeper from Arnold, firing it into the net to make it 1-0 early on.

Arnold took a free kick for the Mocs about 10 yards outside the box, sending it over the line and into the upper right side of the net over UNA’s keeper Savannah Stewart to make it a 2-0 match at the 53:55 mark.

Fox had a header waved off when it was determined that she was offsides, but she would get another chance late in the game. She picked up a pass and darted into the box, going one on one with the keeper. Stewart was able to push the shot away but Arnold was right there to pick it up on the right side and get it past two Lion defenders to make it 3-0 in the 79th minute.

Shields had two powerful saves in the match, reaching up to knock the ball over the net, securing the shutout.

Chattanooga outshot North Alabama 12-10 with a 6-2 shots on goals advantage. Arnold tallied six shots on the night with three on goal. She closed out the match with a game-high five points on two goals and one assist. Fox had two shots, a goal and one assist while four more took one shot each. Shields saved both shots faced.

Stewart had three saves on six shots faced. Kate Wiseman and Shelby Wall each had two shots with one shot on goal apiece. Six more Lions each had one shot on the night.

The Mocs will open Southern Conference action Friday, September 21 against Mercer at Finley Stadium followed by a Sunday matchup against Samford.

Central High School Breaks Ground For New Track

Chattanooga Central High School’s track was built in the 1960s with many a Purple Pounder athlete wearing out shoe leather preparing for competition. Now, almost 50 years later, the well-worn track will be broken down for the installation of a new track and a new beginning for the Central High track teams. The new eight-lane track with additional installations for field events including ... (click for more)

Arming Teachers With Guns Will Be Too Dangerous

Arming teachers with guns in the classroom, as Bill Lee proposes, would be the single most dangerous thing to happen to students in Tennessee history. Students and teachers in close proximity to loaded firearms daily? Across this state, in middle schools alone, there are probably hundreds of student/teacher conflicts a day. What if a student got hold of gun in a struggle with ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: 2018 Ig Nobel Awards

The word ‘ignobel’ is rarely used because only a few among us know that it means "characterized by baseness, lowness, or meanness." About 30 years ago, a glorious group of great scholars took a literary hatchet to form the word into ‘ig nobel’ so it could be placed in the dictionary as a term that means “a satirical social criticism that identifies absurd research.” Think of ...
