Of course, when you go to a barbeque restaurant, you want to try the specialty, so we both ordered barbeque – one beef plate ($7) and one pork plate ($6.50). Wayne decided to also order a chili dog ($3.50). Since I haven’t ordered a hot dog anywhere in quite a while, I thought the price was a bit high – but maybe that’s the “going rate” these days. However, it was a rather small hot dog - and the chili was poured over the bun so it couldn’t be picked up. Wayne did not care for the chili or the bright red weiner.
The meat was very tender, and we were told they had a smoker “out back” and prepared the meat each day. They also make the cole slaw fresh each morning. I did like the sauce as well. It did not have the strong, vinegar taste a lot of barbeque sauces have, and the meat was not smothered with the sauce.
I thought the cole slaw was very good; seemed to have little, if any, mayonnaise, which I liked. Neither of us cared for the potato salad so I asked if they had it shipped in. The answer was yes – and that’s how it tasted – the type you buy in large tubs that really has no taste.
The plates are served with two sides and Texas toast, so I would more than likely skip the potato salad if I were to visit again. All plates are prepared to go in styrofoam containers with plastic ware, even if you are eating at the restaurant. Oh, and they charge you for water!
We did not try a dessert because, here again, we were told they were shipped in.
BBQ City also offers sandwiches including grilled chicken, burgers, grilled cheese and bologna (sandwich prices range from $3 to $4.50), salads ($3 to $5.25), and loaded BBQ Potatoes ($3 to $5.50). Extras are stew ($3.75), chili ($l.50), soup ($3.50), smoked chicken salad ($3) and several other items. In addition, you can order Family Feasts (carry-out only - $16.50 to $22.95), Kid’s Meals, and barbeque by the pound.
Hours for BBQ City are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.
