4-Hour SWAT Standoff Ends As Police Subdue Man In East Ridge
posted November 3, 2009

A four-hour SWAT standoff in East Ridge near Camp Jordan Park ended with police subding a man holed up in his home on Tuesday.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., East Ridge Police responded to 1301 B St. Thomas St. on a man "with an altered mental status" threatening to harm himself. Officers arrived on the scene in three minutes.

Officers quickly made contact with the mant by telephone. He said he was armed with a gun and would shoot Officers if they approached the home.

The East Ridge SWAT team was activated and a perimeter was set up. East Ridge Police negotiators responded to the scene in an attempt to defuse the situation.

Negotiators established contact with the man by telephone and worked for almost four hours in an effort to have him step out of the home peacefully. As the standoff continued and negotiations began to break down, police said the man became increasingly irate and continued to threaten officers.

SWAT officers then deployed a less-lethal chemical device to subdue the man and made entry into the home. The man was taken into custody without further incident.

The man was transported to Parkridge East Hospital for a mental evaluation by Memorial EMS.

Charges have not been filed in the incident.
