Identities Released Of 2 Victims In McCallie Avenue Wrecks

Police on Friday released the identifies of a man who was killed and another man who was critically injured in separate crashes on the McCallie Avenue Viaduct near Oneal Street on Thursday afternoon.

Fredwick C. Cross of 1011 Dodson Ave. was identified as the Good Samaritan who was hit after apparently stopped to aid pedestrian Dewey C. Edalgo of Cartersville, Ga., who is in critical condition at Erlanger Hospital.

Mr. Cross, 61, was the father of four. He was a portrait artist known by the nickname of "Quick Draw."

Police said a Mitsubishi Lancer driven by Shenelle Duncan of Chattanooga was traveling westbound on McCallie Avenue crossing over the railroad bridge when a pedestrian crossed in front of the car and was struck.

According to the driver and witnesses, the pedestrian, Mr. Edalgo, began crossing the street and saw the car coming, then tried to cross back onto the sidewalk. The car was unable to avoid the collision.

No charges are to be filed in this crash.

A Jeep Cherokee driven by Carly Wells of Lynchburg, Tn., was traveling eastbound on McCallie Avenue where the initial crash occurred. According to the driver, her attention was focused on the first crash and she was not looking in front of her when she struck a Dodge Ram pickup that had stopped.

The driver of the Dodge, Mr. Cross, had stopped and was believed to be going to assist with the first crash when he and his vehicle were struck by the Jeep Cherokee.

He was pronounced dead at Erlanger Hospital.

Charges are pending against Ms. Wells.
